Given :-

Frequency (f) = 220 Hz

Speed = 990m/s

To find:-

The wave length of sound waves

According to the formula

\boxed{\sf\ speed(v) = frequency (f) \times wavelength (\lambda)}

\implies\sf v= f \times \lambda\\ \\ \implies\sf 990 = 220\times \lambda\\ \\ \implies\sf \cancel{\dfrac{990}{220}}= \lambda\\ \\ \implies\sf 4.5 m = \lambda

★Wave length = 4.5m

Some Characteristics of sound :-

Time period :- Time taken to complete one vibration or Time require to produce one complete wave .

Unit used to measure time period is seconds (s)

Wave length :- Length of one complete wave .

SI unit of wave length is metre (m)

It is denoted by lambda ! \sf (\lambda)

Frequency is denoted by (f)

It is defined as the number of vibration per seconds .

SI unit of frequency is Hertz (Hz)

f= 1/T

velocity of wave :- The distance travelled by wave in one seconds called velocity or speed of wave .

SI unit to measure wave is m/s

Amplitude :- The maximum displacement of particles from its mean position .

SI unit of amplitude is metre (m).

Given:

  • Frequency = 220 Hz

  • Speed = 990 m/s

To be calculated:

Calculate the wavelength of the sound waves ?

Formula used:

Speed of wave = Frequency × wavelength

Solution :

We know that,

Speed of wave = Frequency × wavelength

★ Putting the values in the above formula,we get

⇒ 990 = 220 × Wavelength

⇒ Wavelength = 990/220

⇒ Wavelength = 99/22

⇒ Wavelength = 4.5 m

Thus, the wavelength of sound wave is 4.5 metres.

Extra information:

  • Wavelength = The distance between two waves.

  • Time period = Time taken to complete one wave.

  • Frequency = Number of waves produce in one second.
