It is necessary because only then will the calorimeter be able to measure the quantity of heat when a substance will be mixed with another one.

If the calorimeter isn't kept in a wooden box, then, heat will escape from it to the surroundings when substances are mixed and the right quantity of heat energy won't be measured.
