Concept

We will first calculate the work done by both person in a single day and then this work done in a day can be used to find out out how much they both work together for 4 day and then the rest of work can be calculated.

Given

The number of days A has to work to finish the work = 24 days

The number of days B has to work to finish the work = 20 days

A and b work together for 4 days.]

Find

We have to calculate the number of days to finish the work when they both work for 4 days and then B work alone.

Solution

The amount of work A does in one day = 1/24

The amount of work B does in one day = 1/20

Total work done = 1

The work done in 4 days when A and B work together = 4*(1/24 + 1/20)

= 4*(20+24)/480

= 44/120

= 11/30

The left work = 1 - 11/30

= 19/30

The number of days required to finish the 19/30 work by B alone = 19/30 * 20

= 38/3

= 12.6 days

Therefore total number of days to  finish the work = 4 days + 12.6 days

= 16.6 days

Hence the number of days to finish the work is 16.6 days.
