Given:

a can do a piece of work in 12 days and b in 18 days .

They worked together for 4days when a fell ill and b had to complete the remaining work .

To Find:

in how many days was the work completely

Solution:

a's 1 day work =\frac{1}{12}

b's 1 day work =\frac{1}{18}

(a+b)'s 1 day work =\frac{1}{12}+\frac{1}{18}=\frac{5}{36}

(a+b)'s 4 days work =\frac{5 \times 4}{36}=\frac{20}{36}

Remaining work = 1-\frac{20}{36}=\frac{16}{36}

b can do complete work in days = 18

b can do 16/36  work in days =18 \times \frac{16}{36}=8

Hence The work completes in 8 more days
