Given that A can do a piece of work in 40 days. But He works for 8 days.

Work was done by in 1-day = 1/40.

In that 8 days, Work done by A = (1/40 * 8)

                                                    = 1/5.

Given that B finishes the remaining work in 16 days.

The remaining work by b = 1 - 1/5

                                           = 4/5.

B will complete total Work in =  (16 * 5/4)

                                                 = 20 days.

Work was done by B in 1-day = 1/20.

(A+B)'s 1 -day work = 1/40 + 1/20

                                = 3/40.

If they work together they can finish the work in 40/3 days (or) 13 1/3 days.

Hope this helps!
