a can do a piece of work in 6 days and B can do it in 8 days. How long will they take to compltet it together?

no. of days 'a' takes to complete the whole work = 6

☞ no. of days 'b' takes to complete the whole work = 8

To find,

no.of days both 'a' & 'b' take to complete the work = ??

step 1:

amount of work 'a' completes in one day = whole work/total no. of days.

therefore, amount of work 'a' completes in one day = 1/6

amount of work 'b' completes in one day = whole work/total no. of days.

amount of work 'b' completes in one day = 1/8

step 2:

amount of work both'a' & 'b' complete in one day = 1/6+1/8 = 7/24

therefore, no of days both'a' & 'b' take to complete the whole work = whole work/amount of work done in one day.

☞ therefore, no of days both'a' & 'b' take to complete the whole work = 1÷7/24 = 1×24/7 = 24/7 = 3¾ days.
