Given that A can do the work in 8 - days.

Work done by A in 1 day = (1/8).

Given that B can do the work in 12 days.

Work done by B in 12 days = (1/12).

Now,

Work done by them in 1 - day = (1/8) + (1/12)

= (1 * 3 + 1 * 2)/24

= 5/24.

Therefore they can complete the work in 24/5 (or) 4 (4/5) days.

Hope this helps!

These types of problems particularly of this pattern can be solved very easily by using this trick:

A can do a work in 8 days

B can do the same work in 12 days

So, let us consider the common total work need to be done by them so;which is LCM of the quantities,

LCM (8, 12)

=24

So total number of days required will be

Days by A = 24/8 =3

Days by B= 24/12 =2

Total = 5 days

So, they can do the same work in 5 days if they work together

Synopsis for the trick:

1) Find the LCM for the number of days

2)Divide them by respective days

3)Add the solution to get the number of days required
