A can finish a job alone in 42 days and C can do the same in 35 days. A and B both work on the project for 5 days, after which B leaves for vacation. A works for a day alone, after which C joins him and they both work together on the project for 8 days, after which A leaves for vacation. C works on the project alone for a day, after which B returns and both B and C together finish the project in 5 days. How long will it take for B to finish the project alone?

let B takes x days to finish the work.

work done by A and B both in 5days=5/42+5/x

workdone by A alone for one day=1/42

workdone by A and C both in 8 days=8/42+8/35

workdone by C alone for one day=1/35

workdone by both B and C in 5 days

=5/x+5/35.

now total workdone is equal to 1

so, 5/42+5/x+1/42+8/42+8/35+1/35+5/x+5/35=1

therefore, x=37.5 days
