A candidate score 25% marks and failed by 60 marks while the other candidate got 50% marks and got 40 marks more than the maximum marks required to pass..Find the total marks of the examination​

first candidate score = 25% of x = x/4

other candidate score = 50% of x = x/2

Let passing marks is 'y'

y = ( x/4 ) + 60 and y + 40 = x/2

Now put first eq in second and we have,

x/4 + 60 + 40 = x/2

=> x/4 = 120

=> x = 480 marks.

y = 180 marks.
