let the total marks be x
let the pass mark be y
then a student who scores 30% of x fails by 5 marks
therefore (30/100)*x + 5 = y
0.3x+5=y ==> (1)
then a student who scores 50% of x passes by 25 marks
therefore (50/100)*x - 25 = y
0.5x-25=y ==> (2)
from (1) and (2)
0.3x + 5= 0.5x - 25
0.2x = 30
x = 150
