When a capacitor is charged by a cell of emf E and the charging battery is then removed. When a identical capacitor is inserted in the circuit in parallel with the previous capacitor, the potential difference will become half across the new capacitor.

When the battery is disconnected across the first capacitor, the charge is stored. The calculation of common potential will be equal to 0+C*V/2C which is equal to V/2.

Thus, the potential difference becomes half due to the parallel connection.
