A capacitor is connected across a battery, (i) Why does each plate receive a charge of exactly the same magnitude? (ii) Is this true even if the plates are of different sizes?​

a) The each plate of a capacitor receives charge of exactly the same magnitude

  • The capacitor plates are generally connected in series.In series connection the charge would be same on every element in the circuit
  • So the plates of a capacitor have equal charge

b) Yes the statement is true even in the case of different sizes of plates

  • The capacitance of a capacitor depends on several factors such as area of the plates and also the separation between them
  • The charge on the capacitor plates is independent on these factors and is sane on both the plates
