A capacitor is connected with a battery. If we move the plates of the capacitor apart, we overcome the force of electrostatic attraction between the plates and consequently we do positive work. What happens to the energy of the capacito

We know that capacitance of the parallel plate capacitor is given as :

C = ε₀A/d

when the plate are pulled apart, d increases and hence Capacitance decreases.

since it is connected to battery of constant voltage, energy stored in the capacitor is given by,

E = CV²/2

since C decreases and hence E decreases. so capacitor discharges by giving current to battery.

Hence when the plates of a capacitor are pulled apart, it's energy decreases.
