Given,

Maximum velocity of a car=20m/s

Acceleration at maximum velocity=5m/s2

Retardation =2m/s2

To Find,

Time for which the car is in motion.

Solution,

It is given that initially at rest.

Means, u=0m/s

Also final velocity is 20m/s

Means, v=20m/s

here, a=-5m/s^2

We have to find time of motion

So, t=?

We know that from the laws of motion that, v=u+at

⇒20=0+5t

⇒5t=20

⇒t=20/5=4sec

Hence, time for which the car is in motion is 4sec.
