A car at a position 150 km [W] of Toronto travels to a position 400 km [W] of Toronto. The total displacement of the car is:
Answer is 250 km [w] but somebody please explain why we have to subtract the final with the initial value instead of adding them. I thought that total displacement meant addition? Is subtraction the only exception when talking about position?

Explanation:

it's not about adding or subtracting.. displacement basically means "shortest distance" from initial to final position.. so it is basically depends upon the question.. it's not like you've always add or subtract..
