Given : A car begins from a point and moves in the North direction for 26 km and then takes a U-turn moves back along the same road in the South direction for 7 km.

the distance in the North direction is represented by a positive integer,

To Find : total distance travelled by the car

what will be the sign for the distance travelled in the South direction

Solution:

the distance in the North direction is represented by a positive integer,

Then  distance travelled in the South direction  is represented by  -ve sign

But Distance is always taken positive

Hence total Distance travelled = | 26 |  + | - 7 |

= 26 + 7

= 33  km

Final position from the starting point  =  26  - 7  = 19  km   North
