Provided Question

A car covers 240 km in 3 hours and a motorcycle covers 360 km in 4 hours. Which vehicle is travelling faster?

How to solve?

  • In order to find which vehicle is travelling faster firstly we need to calculate at which speed they are travelling.

  • So, to calculate their speed, we will use the given formula:–

 \boxed {\large \bf { Speed = \dfrac {Distance}{Time} }}

  • The vehicle which will have greater speed will travel faster than the another one.

Required Solution

 \boxed {\large \bf  \red { Case \: 1st }}

  • Distance covered by a car = 240 km

  • Time taken = 3 hrs

We know that,

  •  \boxed {\large \bf { Speed = \dfrac {Distance}{Time} }}

 \rm { \implies Speed =\cancel{ \dfrac { 240km}{3hrs} }}

 \rm \purple { \implies Speed = 80km/h }

 \boxed {\large \bf  \red { Case \: 2nd }}

  • Distance covered by a motorcycle = 360 km

  • Time taken = 4hrs

 \rm { \implies Speed =\cancel{ \dfrac { 360km}{4hrs} }}

 \rm \purple { \implies Speed = 90km/h }

_____

Therefore,

 \sf { Speed \: of \: car \: < \: Speed \: of \: motorcycle }

So, Motorcycle is travelling faster.

We have to compare the uniform rate of change of distance between the two vehicles in order to select the vehicle which was faster.

Car:-

Distance travelled = 240 km

Time taken = 3 h

We know,

s = vt

⟹ v = s/t

⟹ v1 = (240 km)/(3 h)

⟹ v1 = 80 km/h

Motorcycle:-

Distance travelled = 360 km

Time taken = 4 h

since v = s/t

∴ v2 = (360 km)/(4 h)

⟹ v2 = 90 km/h

By observation,

v1 < v2

⟹ Speed of car < Speed of motorcycle

The motorcycle was travelling faster.
