let total distance be 2x km
1st half = x km ; speed = 40kmph
time taken = x/40 h
2nd half = x km ; speed = 60kmph
time= x/60 h
Total distance travelled= 2x km
total time taken= x/40 + x/60
= (3x+2x)/120
= 5x/120
= x/24 h
average speed= total distance travelled/total time taken
= 2x/ (x/24) = 48 kmph
