Let us consider motion during first half run. Let total distance of travel be d. The first half distance will be d/2. During this distance body acquires velocity v1. We assume that body starts from rest and moves with uniform acceleration.If time for this journey is t1 then,

d/2= ((0+v1)/2) t1.

therefore, t1=d/v1…………..eq.(1)

For the second half of the run, let two equal intervals of time be t.

Then, d/2=v2t+v3t=(v2+v3)t.

Average velocity by definition is given by total distance/total time.

total distance = d.

total time =t1+2t.

Therefore, average velocity =d/(t1+2t). using eq.(1)
