v₀ = initial velocity of the car in east direction = 12 m/s

v = final velocity of the car in east direction = 2 m/s

t = time interval = 4 sec

a = acceleration of the car

acceleration of the car is given as

a = (v - v₀)/t

inserting the values in the above equation

a = (2 - 12)/4

a = - 2.5 m/s²

hence the acceleration of car is 2.5 m/s² in west direction. the negative sign indicates opposite direction
