A car initially at rest moves with a constant acceleration along a straight road. After its speed increases to 40km/hr it moves with a constant speed and finally retards uniformly .The time interval for the three parts of the journey are in the ratio 1:3:1. Find the average velocity of car.

The average velocity of the car is equal to 32 km/hr

Explanation:

the average velocity can be defined as the ratio between the total distance covered by the total time taken to cover the distance.

  • For determining the value we should draw a graph As given below.
  • Let us consider the time ration as 1hr , 3hr and 1hr respectively
  • The total distance is the area of the trapezium= 0.5x (5+3)x40= 160
  • Now the total time which is taken is equal to 5hr.
  • Hence the average speed is equal to 160/5km/hr = 32km per hr.
