Given,

Initial velocity , u = 20 m/s

time taken to stop car , t = 5sec

According to question, after 5 sec car brings to rest.

so, final velocity of car , v = 0 m/s

Use formula,

v = u + at,

0 = 20 + a5

5a = -20 ⇒ a = -4 m/s²

Here negative sign indicates that motion is retarding .

ashwin9759: retarding means
saurav01234567890: Decceleration
saurav01234567890: That means the bodies acceleration is decreasing.
ashwin9759: cant understand that how 20 become -
saurav01234567890: See the answer is in negative that means the body is deccelerating
saurav01234567890: Which means the body may be acted upon my brakes
ashwin9759: thank you very much
saurav01234567890: Wlcm! :)

A=V_U/t
A= 0_ 20/5
A= 4 metre per second square (retardation)
