Hi ,

amount of fuel consumed in

return trip = x gallons --( 1 )

amount of fuel consumption in going

to trip = ( x + x/4 )

= ( 4x + x )/4

= 5x/ 4 ---( 2 )

According to the problem given ,

Total fuel consumed = 4½ gallons

( 1 ) + ( 2 ) = 9/2

x + 5x/4 = 9/2

( 4x + 5x )/4 = 9/2

9x/4 = 9/2

x = ( 9 × 4 )/( 2 × 9 )

after cancellation , we get

x = 2

Therefore ,

Amount of fuel consumed while

coming back = 5x/4

= (5 × 2 )/4

= 5/2

= 2½ gallons

I hope this helps you.

a car is filled with four and half gallons of fuel for a round trip.
or , car is filled with 4 1/2 = 9/2 gallons of fuel for a round trip .

now amount of fuel taken while going is 1/4 more than the amount taken for coming.

Let amount of fuel taken for going = X gallons
then, amount of fuel taken for coming = X + X/4 gallons

now, X gallons +( X + X/4 ) gallons = 9/2 gallons
2X + X/4 = 9/2
9X/4 = 9/2
X = 2 gallons

hence, amount of taken fuel for coming back = (X + X/4) = 2 + 2/4 = 2 1/2 gallons
