a car is moving at a speed of 108 km per hour the driver of the car suddenly finds a puppy sitting in the middle of the road at a distance of 100m and applies brakes to produce the retardation of 5 M per second to save the puppy the reaction time of the driver is 0.2 second will he is able to save the puppy explain

Convert 108 km/h to m/s

=> (108 x 5/18) m/s = 30 m/s

=> S = ut + 1/2 at^2

=> S = 30 x 0.2 - 1/2 x 5 x 0.2

=> S = 6 - 0.5

=> S = 5.5 m

Yes he will save the puppy because the car will stop after a distance of 5.5 m but puppy is at 100 m.

Concept:

  • One-dimensional motion kinematics
  • We have to apply kinematics equations
  • We have to understand reaction time and its implications on the braking system.

Given:

  • initial velocity = 108 km/h = 30m/s
  • Distance = 100m
  • Retardation = 5 m/s^2
  • Reaction time = 0.2s

Find:

  • If the driver is able to save the puppy or not

Solution:

We know that s = ut+1/2at^2

s = 30 (0.2) +1/2 (-5)(0.2)^2

s = 6 - 0.1

s = 5.9.

The reaction time of the driver is 0.2s, he will have a buffer distance of 5.9m. He has a distance of 100m.

The driver will be able to save the puppy.
