A car is moving with a velocity of 16 m/s when brakes are applied. The force applied by the brake is 1000n. The mass of the car along with its passengers is 1200 kg.How long should the brakes be applied to make the car come to a halt?

in this question,
initial velocity is 16 m/s
final velocity is 0 m/s
As you know ,
F=MA (here force is 1000N and mass is 1200kg and decelleration is X )
or, 1000 = 1200* X
or, X =1000/1200
or, X= 0.83333.... m/ s Square
so, using 1st law of motion ,
v=u+at
0= 16 +(- 0.83)* t
or, - 16= -0.83t
or, t= -16/83 *100
or, time=19.6 second.

Answer:

The answer is 19.2 seconds

Explanation:

Look at the pic attached below...

One tip: when you are doing teh force=mass*acceleration, don't convert to decimal...fraction form is more accurate and trust me, easy to work with!!

Hope this helps!!
