Given:

A car is travelling 25.72 km to the north. The car stopped for a while to ask for directions then continued to travel for 39.5 km towards same direction.

To find:

  • Distance and Total displacement of car?

Calculation:

  • Distance is the total path length travelled by a body.

  • Displacement is the shortest length between the starting and stopping point of the object.

In this case , since the car continues to travel in the same direction (i.e. doesn't change its direction of motion) , the distance will be equal to displacement.

DISTANCE = DISPLACEMENT = 25.72 + 39.5

=> Distance = Displacement = 69.22 km.

So, distance and displacement is 69.22 km.
