A car is travelling at a speed of 90 km/h. Brakes are applied so as to produce a uniform acceleration of – 0.5 m/s2. Find how far the car will go before it is brought to rest?

Final speed = v = 0 m/sec

Acceleration = a = -0.5 m/sec²

Distance = S

Applying the third equation of motion,

v²-u² = 2aS

0-25² = 2×-0.5×S

-625 = -1S

S = 625 metres

Therefore the car will travel 625 metres before coming to rest.
