Total distance= distance travelled on going+
distance travelled on coming.
=120+120=240km.
Time taken in going= distance / speed
=120/40=3hr
Similarly,
Time taken in coming=120/60=2hr
Total time taken=3+2=5hr
Therefore,
Average Speed=Total distance travelled/
Total time taken.
=240/5=48km/hr

Therefore the average speed for the journey is 48km/hr.
