Hey user !!

Here's the answer you are looking for

For the 1st journey,
distance travelled = 120km
speed = 40km/hr

So,  \: time \:  taken =  \frac{120}{40}  = 3 \: hrs.

For the return journey,
distance travelled = 120km
speed = 60km/hr

So, \:  time \:  taken =  \frac{120}{60}  = 2 \: hrs.

Average \:  speed =  \frac{total \: distance \: travelled}{total \: time \: taken}

So,
average \:  speed =   \frac{120  \: +  \: 120}{2  \: +  \: 3}  \\ \\   =  \frac{240}{5}  \\  \\  = 48km {hr}^{ - 1}

Therefore, the average speed is 48km/hr.
