a=v/t

so, a1= 12/4 m/s2= 3 m/s2

... a2=16/4 m/s2=4m/s2

so by vector adding,resultant accileration is,a'=

 \sqrt{ {4 }^{2} +  {3}^{2}   + 2 \times 4 \times 3 \cos(90 ) }  = 5 \\

therefore, average acceleration, a"= 5/4 m/s2= 1.25 m/s2
