Initial speed of the car (u) = 54 km/h = 15 m/s

Final speed of the car (v) = 0 m/s

Acceleration produced by brakes in opposite direction = - 3 m/s^2

Let the time taken to stop the car be t

Using first equation of motion:

v = u + at

0 = 15 - 3 × t

t = \frac{15}{3}

t = 5 seconds

Hence, the time taken by the car to come to rest is 5 seconds.
