Final velocity = v = 0m/s (Car comes to rest)

Time taken = t = 5s

From Newton's Laws of Motion,

v = u+ at

0 = 40 + 5a

5a = -40

a = -8m/s²

We can also find out the acceleration by the formula of acceleration

a = Change in velocity/Time

a = (v - u)/t

a = (0 - 40)/5

a = -40/5 = -8m/s²

Here the -ve sign indicates that the body is retarding or decelerating
