 A car of mass 2 * 103 kg travelling at 36 km/hr  on a horizontal road is brought to rest in a distance of 50m by the action of brakes and frictional forces.

Calculate:  (a) average stopping force, (b) Time taken to stop the car.

Answer:

a)360N

b)100sec

Explanation:

apply kinematics equations

v²=u²+2as

as the is already in motion our initial velocity u = 36km/hr

converting this to the si units gives 18m/s

use the below conversion(18km/hr =5m/s)

v²-u²=2as

0-18m/s = 2 x a x 50m

a = -18m/s ÷ (50m x 2)

a = 0.18m/s²

F = ma

  = 2000kg x 0.18m/s²

  =360N

time use

v = u + at

t = (v-u)÷a

 = (0-18m/s)÷-0.18m/s²

 = 100sec
