Answer:

In first case:

u = 0

v = 10 m/s

t = 40 s

a = v - u/t

= (10 - 0)/40

= 10/40

= 0.25 m/s²

In second case:

u = 10 m/s

v = 5 m/s

t = 10 s

a = (5 - 10)/10

= -5/10

= -0.5 m/s²

acceleration of a body can be defined as the rate of the change of the velocity of a body per unit time.

Explanation:

  • Let us consider the first case. Here the initial velocity u is equal to zero. The final velocity v is equal to 10 metre per second. The time taken t ,is given 10 seconds for both the cases
  1. In first case:

a= (v-u)t

u = 0m/sec

v = 10 m/sec

t = 10 s

a = (v - u)/t

= (10 - 0)/10

= 10/10

= 1 m/s²

  • In second case,Here the initial velocity u is equal to 10m/sec. The final velocity v is equal to 5m/sec metre per second.

u = 10 m/sec

v = 5 m/sec

t = 10 sec

a = (5 - 10)/10 m/s²

= -5/10m/s²

= -0.5 m/s²

  • the negative value of acceleration signifies that the deceleration of the body is taking place
