The ratio of their speeds is 2:3

Given:

Distance travelled = 240 km

Time taken by car = 3 hr

Time taken by train = 2 hr

To find: ratio of their speeds

Solution:

Distance travelled by car = 240 km

Time taken by car = 3 hr

⇒ Speed = Distance/Time = 240/3

⇒ Speed of car  = 80 km/hr

Also,

Distance travelled by train = 240 km [since the distance is same]

Time taken by train = 2 hr

⇒ Speed = Distance/Time = 240/2

⇒ Speed of train = 120 km/hr

`

Ratio of speeds = speed of car : speed of train

= 80:120

= 8:12

= 2:3

The ratio of their speeds is 2:3.
