The answer is given in the following steps.

Given,

Initial speed of the car: 42km/hr.

The time taken for this first journey: 1 hour.

The speed for the second journey: 36km/hr.

The time taken for the second journey: 3/4hr.

The speed for the third journey: 40km/hr.

The time taken by the car : 15 mins.

converting 15 mins into how much hour?

15÷60

= 1/4 hour

Now,

For calculating the average speed of the car for all the journey it went on:

Avg speed = total speed for all the journey ÷ total time taken by the car.

therefore,

Avg speed = (42 + 36 + 40)/ (1 + 0.75 + 0.25)

since, 3/4 = 0.75 and 1/4 = 0.25.

Avg speed = 118/ 2

= 59 km/hr.

Therefore,

The average speed of the car for the whole journey is 59km/hr.
