here in the question in first line it is given that a car travels a certain distance means some given distance and returns.
it means it travelled some distance and returned to same point which means that the displacement is 0....
because the starting point and ending pt. are same...

The displacement is zero because when the car travels and return at different speed , the starting and ending point are same .
