A car travels a distance of 200km along a straight road ar speed of 40km/h. The car returns back to same location with speed of 60km/h. Find the average speed and the average velocity of the car for the entire journey.

Let point x be the starting point and y be the destination

So,

time taken to travel from x to y =

200km/40km/h

=5 hours

time taken to travel from y to x =

200km/60km/h

=10/3 hours

Average speed =

Total distance travelled/Total time taken

= 200 + 200/5 + 10/3

= 400/25/3

= 48 km/h

Average velocity =

0 since displacement is also 0
