Therefore the average speed of the car is 110 kmph.

Given:

Speed of the car for first half = s₁ = 120 kmph

Time traveled for first half = t₁ = 3/2 hour

Speed of the car for second half = s₂ = 100 kmph

Time traveled for second half = t₂ = 3/2 hour

To Find:

The average speed of the car.

Solution:

The given question can be solved as shown below.

The distance traveled by car in the first half = d₁ = 120 × 3/2 = 180 km

The distance traveled by car in the second half = d₂ = 100 × 3/2 = 150 km

The average speed of the car = ( Total distance traveled ) / ( Total time taken )

Total distance traveled = 180 + 150 = 330 km

Total time is taken = 3 hours

⇒ The average speed of the car = 330/3 = 110 kmph

Therefore the average speed of the car is 110 kmph.
