Let assume total time = t and total distance = 2d

for 1st half,

v = 40km/h

s1 = d

t1 = d/40

similarly for 2nd half

v=60km/h

s2 = d

t2 = d/ 60

Mean speed = Total distance/ Total time

= 2d / t1 + t2

= 2d/ d/40 +d/60

= 2d / d(1/40+1/60)

= 2× 250/ 10

= 48km/h
