let the total distance be 2x

ist half :-
time travelled = x/40

2nd half :-
time travelled = x/60

average speed
=(2x)/(x/40 + x/60)
= 2 x 120 / 5
=48

Average speed = (2×V1×V2)/V1+V2. ....eq( 1)
As V1 = 40km/h and V2 = 60Km/h
on putting value of V 1 and V2 in eq( 1 )
average speed = 48 km/h
