Average speed = TOTAL DISTANCE / TOTAL TIME

Total distance = 10 km + 5 km + 10 km + 5 km

= 30 km = 30000 m

Total time = 30 min * 60 secs = 1800 secs

Avg speed = 30000 / 1800

==> 16.6667 m/s = 60 km/hr

The average speed of the car is 60 km/h.

A car travels along the route PQRST in 30 minutes.

We have to find the average speed of the car.

Concepts :

  • Distance : It is the total length of path covered by a body.
  • Displacement : it is the shortest distance between final to initial position of a body. No matter what is the path of the body, it will just depend on final and initial position.
  • Average speed : Average speed is the ratio of total distance covered to the time taken by a body.
  • Average velocity : It is the ratio of total displacement to the total time taken by a body.

Here we need to find the average speed. so we should find total distance covered by the car along the route PQRST in 30 minutes.

Total distance = total path length = PQ + QR + RS + ST

= 10 km + 5 km + 10 km + 5 km

= 30 km

total time taken to cover the distance = 30 min

∴ Average speed = 30 km/30min = 30km/(30/60 hr) = 60 km/h.

Therefore the average speed of the car is 60 km/h.
