Given Data:
Distance covered by a car = 200 km
Time = 3 hours
Speed= ?
Velocity = ?
Solution:
Since we know that,
Speed = Distance covered / Time taken
Substituting the values, we get:
Speed = 200 / 3
Speed = 66.67 km
Velocity will also be calculated by using the same formula
Velocity = Distance covered / Time taken
Velocity = 200 / 3
Velocity = 66.67 m/s
As we know that speed is a scalar quantity, so only magnitude is required which is already calculated.
But velocity is a vector quantity. Hence, both magnitude and direction should be calculated.
It is given that the car travels to a distant city due east. So its direction will be towards east and its magnitude is calculated as above.

The difference between speed and velocity is that speed has only magnitude it has no specific direction but velocity has magnitude as well as direction. In fact velocity of a body is its speed in a specified direction in a single straight line. Speed is a scalar quantity because it has magnitude only velocity is a vector quantity because it has magnitude as well as direction.
Solution:
Given:
Distance= 200 km
Time = 3 hrs
Speed= Distance/ time
Speed= 200/3 = 66.6666....
Speed= 66.67 km/hr(approx)
Velocity= 66.67 km/hr towards East.
