Solution :

Here, car is travelling at the speed of 10 m/s. So,

  • initital speed of the car, u = 10 m/s

After the brakes were applied, it starts to decelerate at a rate of 2m/s². So,

  • final speed of the car, v = 0 m/s
  • retardation of the car, a = -2m/s²

Let's use the formula - = 2a.s.

Put the values of u, v and a in the formula.

=> v² - u² = 2as

=> (0)² - (10)² = 2(-2)s

=> -100 = -4s

=> s = 100/4

=> s = 25m

∴ The distance travelled by the car before coming to the rest is 25m.
