A carbon atom forms(TWO,THREE, OR FOUR) bonds with other atoms by(SHARING LOSING GAINING) valence electrons in order to attain a stable configuration.

A carbon atom can't gain or loose electron ..
so in order to achieve a completely filled valence shell it shares it's electron with the other atoms by forming single , double or triple bond between the carbon atoms .
