The atomic mass of Carbon is 12 while that of Oxygen is 16.

Given that the molecular mass of the compound is 290 and that 50% by mass is carbon and oxygen, we can form the following equations,

Let the no. of Carbon atoms be X and the no. of Oxygen atoms be Y.

From the above data, the following can be concluded,

12 X = 290/2

 =>  X      =145/12

 =>  X      = 12.08

Similarly,

16Y = 290/2

=>  Y    = 145/16
 =>   Y    = 9.06

C12O9

is the molecular formula of the given compound.
