A carbon compound 'p' with two carbon atoms on heating with excess conc. H2SO4 forms
other compound 'Q' which on addition of hydrogen in the presence of nickel catalyst
form a saturated compound 'R'. One molecule of 'P' on combustion forms carbondioxide
and water
Identify 'p' 'Q' 'R'. Write the equation for the reactions involved.

Given: Compound P and Q

Concentration element = H2SO4

To Find: P Q and R with equations

Solution:

On reacting with the hydrogen in presence of the catalyst, Q forms a saturated compound. Therefore, Q will be an unsaturated compound.

P is an alcohol, where dehydration with concentrated H 2SO4 forms an alkene. The combustion of alkalene forms two gases namely CO2  and H2O.

Thus,

P - CH3CH2OH

Q - CH2 = CH2

R = CH3CH3

CH3CH2OH →→ CH2 = CH2 + H2O

Compound P is Ethanol and compound Q is Ethene.

CH2 = CH2 + H2 →→ CH3CH3

Compound R is Ethane
