Given that,

Length of piece of wood is 15 feet

A carpenter needs 10 and five-twelfths feet of wood.

To find,

How much wood should be cut?

Solution,

Total length of piece is 15 feet

He needs 10\dfrac{5}{12} part of wood

So,

Wood he should cut = total length - needed piece of wood

Wood he should cut =  15-10\dfrac{5}{12}

Wood he should cut = \dfrac{55}{12}=4\dfrac{7}{12}\ \text{feet}

So, he must cut 4\dfrac{7}{12}\ \text{feet} of wood.
