Average speed will be 36km/hr

Explanation:

Average speed = Total Distance/Total time

Let the total distance be 3x

Distance for first part = 1/3 * 3x = x

Speed for the first part = 30km/hr

Time for first part = Distance/Speed

                             = x/30

Distance for second part = 2/3 * 3x = 2x

Speed for the first part = 40km/hr

Time for first part = Distance/Speed

                             = 2x/40 = x/20

Therefore,

Total distance = 3x

Total time = x/30 + x/20 = (2x + 3x)/60 = 5x/60 = x/12

Hence,

Average speed = Total distance/Total time

                          = 3x / (x/12)

                          = 3*12 = 36km/hr
