Well, I've seen few brain teasers on net like these and the answer of them is 'what' because a question mark is not mentioned, which means that the question is actually a statement.
Earlier, even I had thought that the answer was cat, but the question says "A cat" and not only "cat" and even the user MHU has said that cat is not the correct answer. So, the only other answer I can think of is 'what'.
